In regard to the later it can and will be done by inflation or bankruptcy, de facto and/or de jure. People (and institutions) will run from fiat currency to fiat currency seeking safe haven. To make good on debts they're even selling gold. Gold buyers, after the dust has settled, will still have their wealth because the buyers today don't expect to need to sell it tomorrow for food, shelter or margin calls. Every seller of gold has a weak hand, either in terms of real wealth or knowledge about what is going on.
